PC Build of the week – AMD 5950X & RTX 3070 Ti Music Production PC

Check out this incredible AMD Ryzen-based Music Production PC. This PC was built for one thoroughly nice young man, a successful, up-and-coming music producer in London, and we are so happy he chose us to build his new workhorse.

Unlike our last featured music production PC using an Intel 12900K, this is AMD Ryzen-based system, designed to directly replace our client’s existing AMD build. There isn’t much to swing the choice of the platform each way, there are pros and cons to both and we like both platforms too! It was important that we took into consideration the software, the hardware, and the amount of use this PC will be dealing with on a daily basis.

We settled on a Be Quiet! Silent Base 802 as the ‘base’ for this custom build, it is a large/roomy case with great build quality and expandability. We love the mesh front which isn’t seen much on the Be Quiet! range of cases and offers exceptionally good airflow characteristics within the case, with 3x 140mm fans up-front, which as mentioned in the last article, the 140mm fans flow more air for a given sound level…sound level being very important to minimise for an audio engineer!

For CPU Cooling we opted to stick with Be Quiet! and their Silent Loop 2 360mm Liquid All-in-one CPU cooler, this product is very well made, is not ‘bling’ inside the PC, and it’s got great cooling capability for this 16-core processor too, allowing for some overclocking.

The motherboard selected for the build originally was the MSI MPG X570S Carbon Max WiFi, this is a fantastic motherboard with excellent features and power delivery, and looks nice with its Carbon detailing. When I say ‘originally’, this is because our client took delivery of the PC and then later invested in some state-of-the-art Universal Audio Apollo Audio Interfaces, which require Thunderbolt. When it comes to AMD, there is very little support for Thunderbolt, but if you dig enough you will find that both ASUS and ASRock will potentially be able to save the day for you. All of the ASRock X570 AM4 motherboards support Thunderbolt and they utilise a ‘TB1’ 5-pin header on the motherboard which must be connected to a PCIe Thunderbolt expansion card. ASUS support Thunderbolt across the entire B550 chipset, again with a ‘TB’ header on the motherboard, this time with 13-pins, the B550 chipset is ok for those with less PCIe 4.0 requirements, or for full support you need to look at their ProArt X570 motherboard, which is what we ultimately switched our client over to, which has 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports built-in and of course lots of PCIe 4.0 lanes. For other motherboards that support Thunderbolt, we know of select Gigabyte Aorus models but it requires some detailed research.

So what else does music production require from a custom PC? Storage! Lots of storage! In this build, we have a total of 4x Seagate FireCuda 530 M.2 NVMe SSD’s, that’s 16GB of storage, all at PCIe Gen 4.0 speeds – yes, that’s over £2k of storage, but it’s reliable, fast and very much needed by our client!
