RTX 5090 vs RTX 5080: Which Should You Actually Buy?

Whenever someone asks us for a top-end NVIDIA build, this is the decision that really matters: 5090 or 5080? The 5090 is unquestionably faster. The honest answer, though, is that the 5080 is the right card for a good number of people. Here is how to choose without overspending.

The quick answer

  • Buy the 5080 if you game at 1440p or 4K60, want superb performance, and would rather put the saving towards a better CPU, more storage or a nicer monitor.
  • Buy the 5090 if you specifically want 4K at high refresh rates with everything maxed, or you do serious creative or AI work that benefits from its 32GB of memory.

Performance

The 5090 is commonly 30 to 50 per cent faster than the 5080 at 4K, depending on the game. That is a real gap, but two things are worth saying honestly. First, at 1440p the lead shrinks because your processor becomes the bottleneck. Second, the 5080 is already a very fast 4K card, so we are talking about the difference between excellent and exceptional, not between unplayable and playable.

Memory is the real difference

This is the part that often decides it.

  • The 5080 has 16GB, which is plenty for gaming today.
  • The 5090 has 32GB, which matters enormously for 4K with heavy texture mods, professional video and 3D work, and running large local AI models.

If you are a gamer, 16GB is not holding you back. If you are a creator or you dabble in local AI, that extra memory can be the whole reason to step up.

Power, heat and cost of ownership

The 5090 draws 575W and wants a 1000W to 1200W ATX 3.1 power supply, a roomy case, and careful attention to its power connector. The 5080 is far easier to live with, runs cooler and quieter, and fits more builds without compromise. None of that is a dealbreaker for the 5090, but it is real money and real planning, and it is part of the decision.

Our honest take

For most gamers, even enthusiasts, the 5080 is the sweet spot and we are very happy to build around it. Step up to the 5090 when you have a clear reason: 4K high-refresh gaming at maximum settings, or creative and AI workloads that genuinely use the memory. Buying the 5090 just because it is the best can mean paying a large premium for performance you will not actually see at your resolution.

Prices are correct at the time of writing and the GPU, memory and storage markets are moving quickly at the moment, so always check live pricing before you buy. Better still, ask us for a current quote and we will price it up against today's UK stock.
