A fast PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drive still earns its place, because the rolling cache is written to it constantly while you fly, but no drive compensates for a slow line.

CPU choice is critical. MSFS 2024 is heavily CPU-limited, and a 9800X3D lifts frame rates substantially over lesser chips, most visibly in dense city scenery and on study-level airliner flight decks. It moves the bottleneck rather than removing it, which is why we balance the whole machine instead of chasing one number.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: still the most demanding sim

MSFS 2024 produces photorealistic visuals by streaming real world data. The combination of high resolution textures, complex flight model calculations, dynamic weather and dense urban scenery makes it genuinely the hardest mainstream PC game to run smoothly at 4K.

For 4K play we recommend the RTX 5090 alongside a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and at least 32GB of DDR5-6000. Storage matters too: a fast Gen 4 NVMe primary drive plus a separate 2TB or 4TB drive for sceneries and add-ons.

Does MSFS 2024 need a 5090?

For 4K Ultra at 60+ FPS in dense city scenery, yes. The RTX 5080 is borderline, the 5090 is comfortable. At 1440p Ultra a 5070 Ti or 5080 is plenty.

Why does MSFS 2024 stutter or look blurry even on a fast PC?

Usually because the world is arriving late rather than rendering slowly. MSFS 2024 streams its scenery from Microsoft's servers instead of installing it, and can pull tens of gigabytes in an hour, so a slow or unstable connection shows up as cities loading in blurry, photogrammetry appearing late, or a hitch while the simulator waits for data. Microsoft ask for roughly 100 Mbps. A quick NVMe drive does help, because the rolling cache is written to it constantly and a slower drive can cause stutter of its own, but no PC compensates for the line coming into the house. If your frame rate is steady and it is the scenery that looks wrong, check the connection before you blame the hardware. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a drive that cannot fix it.

Will VR work on these builds?

Yes, but VR adds substantial overhead. We recommend RTX 5090 for VR users on Pimax Crystal class headsets. RTX 5080 is fine for Quest 3 and Valve Index.
