X-Plane 12 Performance
X-Plane 12 asks more of the processor than its published specification suggests. Laminar Research describe a capability rather than a model, asking for a DirectX 12-capable card with 4GB of memory, and the only real hardware they name is a decade-old floor buried in the minimum notes. The flight model and aircraft systems lean on per-core speed, so a cache-rich X3D chip pays off more here than most flight sim buyers expect. The graphics card earns its money on the volumetric clouds and in VR, both far heavier than clear-weather flying, and study-level airliners with fully modelled cockpits add their own cost on top. Budget 32GB of memory and a quick NVMe drive if you fly with photo scenery or a large add-on library.

Common questions
What graphics card do I need for X-Plane 12 at 1440p?
For 1440p on high to ultra settings an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT holds well past 80fps, which is comfortable for flying. The graphics card matters most for X-Plane 12's volumetric clouds and for VR, both a great deal heavier than clear-weather flying over open country. If you mostly fly in clear conditions on a single screen, you can spend less here and put the money into the processor instead. Every CREATE PCs machine is balanced around how you actually fly and hand-built in Stevenage.
Is X-Plane 12 more CPU or GPU intensive?
The processor leads, as it does in most serious flight simulators. X-Plane 12's flight model and aircraft systems run across a small number of cores and reward per-core speed and cache, so an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D does more for your frame rate than a bigger graphics card would. The GPU only becomes the limit once you turn the weather up, fly in VR or run triple screens. We spec around that rather than pushing every customer towards the most expensive card on the shelf.
Why do X-Plane 12's system requirements not name a graphics card?
Because Laminar Research describe a capability rather than a model. The recommended specification asks only for a DirectX 12-capable card with at least 4GB of VRAM, and the sole hardware actually named sits in the minimum notes: a GeForce 900 series or newer, a Radeon RX 500 or newer, or an Intel Arc card. Those floors are roughly a decade old, so the published figures tell you what will start the simulator rather than what will fly it well. It is a fair reflection of where the load really sits, since the processor is usually the limit, and it is why our recommendations are built around real frame rates at real settings instead.
How much RAM do I need for X-Plane 12?
Laminar ask for 16GB and that is a sensible floor, but we fit 32GB of DDR5 as standard on our flight sim builds. Photo scenery, large add-on libraries and study-level airliners all consume memory quickly, and 32GB leaves room for charts, a browser and flight-planning tools open alongside the simulator without anything having to swap out to disk.
Can a CREATE PCs build handle X-Plane 12 in VR?
Yes, and X-Plane 12 supports VR natively through SteamVR and Oculus PC. A headset roughly doubles the rendering work and, more to the point, demands frame times that stay steady, because inconsistency is what makes VR uncomfortable rather than a lower average frame rate. For that we would point you at an RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 with 16GB or more of VRAM, paired with a cache-rich processor to keep the simulation side fed. Tell us your headset when you enquire and we will tune the whole machine around it, backed by our 5-year warranty.
