The RTX 4090 — and what came next

When it launched, the GeForce RTX 4090 redefined high-end gaming and creation. Built on NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, it handled 4K at maximum settings, ray tracing and demanding AI and rendering workloads with ease. It became the default choice for anyone wanting no-compromise performance.

NVIDIA has since discontinued the 4090 and replaced it with the GeForce RTX 5090. New 4090 stock is now scarce and rarely represents good value, so for a new build the RTX 5090 is the card we recommend in its place.

Why the RTX 5090 is the better buy today

The RTX 5090 is built on NVIDIA's newer Blackwell architecture and improves on the 4090 in every meaningful way: more CUDA cores, 32GB of next-generation GDDR7 memory (up from 24GB GDDR6X), far greater memory bandwidth, and DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation for dramatically higher frame rates. It is the strongest card available for 4K gaming, content creation and local AI work — a clear step up from the 4090 it replaces.

Can I still buy an RTX 4090 PC?

The RTX 4090 has been discontinued by NVIDIA and succeeded by the RTX 5090, so new 4090 stock is now scarce. For a new build we recommend the RTX 5090, which outperforms the 4090 in every respect. Is the RTX 5090 better than the RTX 4090?
