More and more people want to run AI on their own machine rather than in the cloud, whether that is a local large language model, image generation, or experimenting with their own projects. It is a brilliant use for a powerful PC, but the priorities are quite different from a gaming build. Here is what genuinely matters.
Graphics card memory is king
For most local AI work, the single most important number is how much memory your graphics card has. The model has to fit in that memory to run well, and if it does not, everything slows to a crawl or simply will not load.
- 16GB is a sensible entry point for smaller models and image generation.
- 24GB and beyond opens up larger language models and more headroom.
- 32GB, as on the RTX 5090, is where serious local AI gets comfortable, and it is the main reason that card makes sense for this kind of work even if you never game on it.
This is the opposite of gaming, where raw speed matters most. For AI, capacity comes first.
The processor and memory still count
- A strong modern processor keeps data flowing to the graphics card and handles the parts of the work that do not run on the GPU. You do not necessarily need the very top chip, but a capable multi-core processor helps.
- System memory matters more than for gaming. 64GB is a reasonable target if you work with larger models or datasets, where a gaming machine would be fine on 32GB.
Storage: fast and roomy
AI models are large, and you will collect a lot of them. A fast, generous NVMe drive means models load quickly and you are not constantly juggling space. We usually pair a fast drive for your working models with plenty of capacity for everything else.
Keep it cool and quiet
Sustained AI work runs the hardware hard for long stretches, which is different from the bursts of a game. That makes proper cooling and a quiet, well-tuned system genuinely important, because you may have it working away for hours at a time, often right next to you.
Built for what you are running
The right local AI machine depends entirely on what you want to run, from a modest assistant to large models or heavy image generation. That is exactly the kind of build we enjoy speccing. Tell us what you are working with, and we will balance graphics memory, processor, system memory and storage so it runs smoothly and has room to grow.
Prices are correct at the time of writing and the GPU, memory and storage markets are moving quickly at the moment, so always check live pricing before you buy. Better still, ask us for a current quote and we will price it up against today's UK stock.
